parsimonious and careful life if the miracle of medical technology provides an alternative? Technology steps in after the damage has been done, at a far greater cost to society but at much more dramatic level. As long as these values are held in our society, as long as popular culture continues both to reflect and to reproduce these values, public health practitioners will be seen as spoilsports, not saints.
